How to Book Your Driving Test

Booking your practical driving test is a significant milestone in your journey to becoming a qualified driver. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the booking process with confidence.

✅ Step 1: Ensure You’re Eligible

Before booking your driving test, make sure you meet the following criteria:

  • Passed your theory test: You must have a valid theory test pass certificate.
  • Held a provisional driving licence: Ensure your provisional licence is in good standing.
  • Completed the required learning: While there’s no set number of lessons, you should be competent in all areas of driving.

💻 Step 2: Book Your Test Online

The fastest way to book your driving test is through the official DVSA service:

  • Booking Service: Book your driving test
  • Availability: Tests can be booked up to 24 weeks in advance.
  • Operating Hours: The online service is available from 6 am to 11:40 pm.

You’ll need:

  • Your UK driving licence number
  • A credit or debit card for payment
  • Your driving instructor’s personal reference number (optional, but useful if you want to check their availability)

📞 Step 3: Book by Phone (If Necessary)

If you prefer to book by phone or need assistance, contact the DVSA:

  • Phone: 0300 200 1122
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm

Please note that phone lines can be busy, so online booking is recommended if possible.

🧾 Step 4: Pay the Fee

The standard fee for a car driving test is:

  • £62 for a weekday test
  • £75 for a weekend or evening test

These fees are subject to change, so it’s advisable to check the current rates before booking.

🕒 Step 5: Wait for Confirmation

Once you’ve booked your test, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the details. If you don’t receive this within 24 hours, check your spam folder or contact the DVSA for assistance.

🔄 Step 6: Manage Your Booking

You can:

  • Change your test date: If you need to reschedule, you can change your appointment up to the time your test starts.
  • Cancel your test: If you decide not to take the test, you can cancel it through the official service.

Remember, if you cancel or change your test without giving notice, you may have to pay again.

🧠 Instructor Tip

“As an instructor, I always advise my learners to book their test only when they feel fully prepared. It’s important to be honest with yourself about your readiness to ensure the best chance of success.”
