The Highway Code

The Highway Code sets out the rules, advice, and guidance for driving safely in the UK. While the official code is available from the DVSA, this guide summarises the key points you need to know as a learner driver – along with tips, insights, and common mistakes I’ve seen as a former ADI.

1. Understanding Road Signs

  • Warning signs: Triangular signs warn of hazards ahead (e.g., junctions, pedestrian crossings).
  • Regulatory signs: Circular signs indicate limits or obligations (e.g., speed limits, no entry).
  • Informational signs: Rectangular signs provide guidance (e.g., directions, parking info).

Instructor Tip: Many learners misread warning signs at first. During lessons, I practice identifying signs and predicting potential hazards before reaching them.

2. Speed Limits & Safe Driving

  • Standard limits: 30 mph in built-up areas, 60 mph on single carriageways, 70 mph on dual carriageways/motorways (cars).
  • Adjust speed for conditions: rain, fog, heavy traffic.

Common Mistake: Learners often follow the exact limit without considering conditions. Always drive at a safe speed, not just the legal maximum.

3. Rules for Learner Drivers

  • Always display L‑plates (D‑plates in Wales).
  • Must be supervised by an ADI or qualified driver.
  • Seatbelt laws apply to all passengers.
  • Learners cannot drive on motorways alone; only with a DVSA instructor in a dual-controlled car.

Instructor Insight: I advise learners to practice mirror checks and signalling in low-traffic areas first. This builds safe habits early.

4. Priority, Junctions, and Roundabouts

  • Give way to traffic from the right at uncontrolled junctions.
  • Roundabouts: Give way to traffic from your right, signal when exiting.
  • Pedestrian crossings: Always slow down and stop for pedestrians.

Pro Tip: During lessons, I often run mini quizzes: “What do you do here?” at junctions and roundabouts. This helps learners remember the rules by experience, not just theory.

5. Common Learner Mistakes

  1. Forgetting to check mirrors before manoeuvres.
  2. Misjudging gaps when pulling out at junctions.
  3. Driving too fast for the weather or traffic conditions.
  4. Ignoring small road signs (e.g., weight limits, temporary restrictions).

6. Making the Highway Code Work for You

  • Read the code actively: summarise each section in your own words.
  • Pair reading with practical lessons: apply rules immediately.
  • Use checklists: “Before starting the engine”, “Before turning left/right”, “Before changing lanes”.
