What to Take to Your Test

Going into your practical test well prepared can reduce stress and prevent last-minute problems. Here’s what you must bring, suggested extras, and tips to make sure you’re fully ready.

✅ Required Documents & Items

You must bring:

  • Your UK driving licence (photocard or paper + photocard / valid counterpart)
  • Your theory test pass certificate, if you have it
  • The car you’ll use for the test (often your instructor’s, but you may use your own if it meets DVSA rules)
    • Your own car must satisfy all requirements (roadworthy, insurance, extra mirror, etc.)
  • In Scotland or Wales, a face covering (unless you have a valid exemption) is required during the test
  • Clothing appropriate for the weather (windows may need to be open for ventilation)

If any of the above is missing or invalid, your test may be cancelled, and you might lose the fee.

🦠 COVID-19 / Health Contingencies (Where Still Relevant)

  • If you’re self-isolating on the day of your test, do not attend—reschedule using DVSA’s change service (no charge in such cases)
  • Tests in Scotland and Wales require face coverings unless you have a valid reason (e.g. medical condition)
  • The car’s windows may need to remain partly open for ventilation in line with safety protocols

🧠 Instructor Tips & Best Practices

  • Double-check all documents a few days before the test—especially your licence and theory certificate.
  • If using your own car, test all vehicle systems (lights, brakes, tyres) well in advance.
  • Mount and adjust any extra mirrors ahead of time so they’re available for the examiner.
  • Keep your proof of booking/test confirmation saved on your phone or printed, just in case any verification is needed.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: What if I lose my driving licence just before test day?
A: You must apply for a replacement (DVLA), but this can take time. If it doesn’t arrive in time, your test may be cancelled.

Q: Do I absolutely need the theory test pass certificate?
A: Yes, if you have passed the theory test. If you don’t bring it, the examiner may verify via their systems or they may refuse to continue.

Q: Can I use my own car for the test?
A: Yes — as long as it meets all DVSA’s vehicle rules (roadworthy, taxed/MOT, additional mirror, insurance etc.).

Q: Will I be penalised for not wearing a face covering?
A: In Scotland or Wales, yes — unless you have a valid exemption. In England, it’s optional.
